Journal 1: Find Tempura Restaurant in Yokohama

Serving tempura in restaurantOne thing I wouldn’t miss the chance to do during my first trip to Japan is to experience first hand the local ‘Tempura’, with the original taste of Japan. I had to admit, it is completely different, and sadly to say it was so much better, way better than the ones available back at home. Sadly because I wouldn’t be able to try it every now and then and I would probably have to make a second trip to this land of the rising sun just to have a go at it again. I wouldn’t know when I have that kind of chance to once more, but that is something I would love to do again someday.

The tempura I had was at local restaurant which you’ll probably come across lots of time when you go there. It looks just like the typical traditional Japanese restaurant outlets with very much Japanese style kind of atmosphere. You know, like the ones you usually see in Japanese dramas and movies, only this time, it’s real for me.

The restaurant was merely called as ‘Tempura’ written in full kanji script on the door’s drape. It was located at the heart of Yokohama, very near to the famous and crowded Sakuragi-chou station, which situated next to Minato Mirai 21 where you can see the Landmark Tower. It’s not that hard to find the place, just a few cross over you’ll find a 7-Eleven convenient store, and the restaurant is just along the block. I was told it was one of the best tempura restaurants in town.

How to get there: From Tokyo station you can take the JR Tokaido Line to Yokohama station and make a transfer to Sakuragicho station using JR Yokohama Line for ¥450 and it takes about 30 minutes or so. There is another cheaper option though, but you have to depart from Shibuya station to Yokohama station using the Tokyu Toyoko Line for about ¥260 and it takes about 25 minutes or so. You still have to make a second transfer from Yokohama station to Sakuragicho station using JR Yokohama Line.

I had Tendon, a Teishoku(set meal) with ebi (prawns) and yasai (vegetables) tempura. It was exceptionally delicious. A must try for Japanese foods and cuisine lovers. The staffs are friendly, the food’s good and the prices are affordable – I left without any complaint whatsoever.
